Ecoglo® F4B-E30 Photoluminescent Flat Stair Nosing for Egress Safety

A 3.2-inch-wide, right-angled aluminum stair nosing that provides photoluminescent step-edge visibility, durable slip resistance and improved pathfinding after the lights go out.

The Ecoglo® F4B-E30 Photoluminescent Flat Stair Nosing is designed to fit over the edge of steps in public stairways, exit stairs, egress routes and other locations where visibility and pathfinding in darkness are important.

Ecoglo® photoluminescent technology absorbs and stores energy from normal ambient lighting, then remains visible for an extended period when lighting is reduced or electrical power is lost. The luminous strips, contrasting non-slip insert and right-angled aluminum profile help identify the step edge in both light and dark conditions, supporting safer and more efficient emergency egress.

The F4B-E30 also incorporates a hard-wearing silicon carbide non-slip surface that supplements the stair’s existing slip-resistant properties. It can be installed over concrete, timber, tile, steel, checker plate and thin carpeted stairs. It may also be fitted over suitable commercial or industrial carpet without underlay up to 6 mm, approximately 0.24 inch, thick.

  • 3.2-inch-wide right-angled profile: The attached F4B-E30 data sheet specifies an overall width of 3.2 inches or 82.06 mm.
  • Photoluminescent step-edge visibility: Provides visible step-edge guidance in normal lighting and after the lights go out.
  • Supports safer emergency egress: Helps occupants identify stair edges and follow the egress path during darkness, reduced lighting and power failure.
  • Right-angled aluminum construction: Designed to fit over and protect the front edge of existing steps.
  • UL 1994 and ULC 572 Listed: Listed for photoluminescent egress-marking applications as identified in the manufacturer’s data sheet.
  • Indoor and outdoor use: Designed and tested for durable performance in interior and exterior stair applications.
  • Multiple compatible substrates: Suitable for concrete, timber, tile, steel, checker plate and thin carpeted stairs.
  • Suitable over thin commercial carpet: May be fitted over suitable industrial or commercial carpet without underlay up to 6 mm, approximately 0.24 inch, thick.
  • Patented photoluminescent technology: Manufactured using Ecoglo®’s process for high-brightness, long-lasting photoluminescent performance.
  • Protected luminous strips: Unique raised ridges help shield the photoluminescent material from abrasive foot traffic while allowing easier cleaning.
  • Integrated non-slip protection: A hard-wearing silicon carbide non-slip insert is integrally bonded to the aluminum substrate.
  • Designed for heavy foot traffic: The bonded non-slip material is engineered to withstand thousands of foot passes without visible signs of wear.
  • Improved step-edge contrast: The contrasting non-slip insert and photoluminescent strips clearly define the leading edge of each stair.
  • Slip-resistant in varied conditions: The luminous ridges and integrated anti-slip insert provide all-weather slip resistance.
  • Durable anodized finish: The hard anodized surface provides an attractive architectural finish while helping resist corrosion, abrasion and everyday wear.
  • UV and weather resistant: Tested for accelerated UV exposure, salt-spray resistance and freeze-thaw performance.
  • Long-term outdoor performance: The manufacturer reports performance loss below human-eye detection after 6,000 hours of UV exposure, described as comparable to approximately 30 years of outdoor exposure.
  • Easy to clean: The profile and protected luminous strips are designed for practical washability and stain resistance.
  • Flexible installation: Install with premium polyurethane adhesive and mechanical fasteners, or with adhesive only where appropriate.
  • Pre-drilled countersunk holes: Available pre-drilled for a clean, secure mechanical installation.

Photoluminescent Egress Path Marking

Ecoglo® F4B-E30 Photoluminescent Flat Stair Nosing – 3.2-Inch-Wide Step-Edge Protection

Improve step-edge visibility, support safer emergency egress and add durable slip resistance to commercial and public stairways.

The Ecoglo® F4B-E30 Photoluminescent Flat Stair Nosing combines advanced photoluminescent technology, a hard-wearing silicon carbide non-slip surface and a durable aluminum stair-nosing profile in a compact 3.2-inch-wide body.

After exposure to natural or artificial light, the photoluminescent strips remain visible when normal lighting is reduced or power is lost. The contrasting non-slip insert helps clearly identify the front edge of each stair in both normal and low-light conditions.

Important Code Compliance Note
IBC/IFC 2009 and 2012 Section 1024 applies only to the photoluminescent version.

The IBC/IFC luminous egress path marking reference applies specifically to the photoluminescent F4B-E30 stair-nosing configuration. It must not be applied to or used to describe the non-photoluminescent F4B-N30 stair nosing.

Ecoglo® Photoluminescent Stair Strips

FAQ

How do Ecoglo® contrast strips work?

Ecoglo®’s stair strips absorb ambient light—natural or artificial—and store energy. In the dark, they emit a bright glow for hours, marking step edges clearly without electricity or batteries.

How long do the strips glow in darkness?

Fully charged strips can glow for 6–12 hours, depending on light exposure. They recharge quickly under standard lighting conditions.

Are these strips code-compliant?

Yes, Ecoglo E20 strips meet IBC, IFC, OSHA, and local building codes for egress path markings and visibility in emergency conditions.

Why are continuous lines of luminance important in evacuation paths?

Continuous lines of photoluminescent markings along evacuation routes—especially on steps, handrails, and landings—help guide evacuees safely, even in darkness or smoke.

Unlike overhead lighting, photoluminescent stairway guidance (SWG) systems are placed low and remain visible beneath smoke layers, ensuring people can clearly see where to place their hands and feet during an emergency.

Can Ecoglo® contrast strips be used outdoors?

Yes. Ecoglo® contrast strips are UV-resistant, weatherproof, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications—ideal for stairwells, ramps, loading docks, and fire exits.

  • Tested to accelerated UV/weathering exposure, and proven to be highly resistant to the effects of UV/weathering.
  • The loss in performance is less than can be detected by the human eye when subjected to 6000 hours of UV exposure, which is similar to 30 years of outdoor exposure.
  • The polymer used in Ecoglo®’s patented process is “long chain” which forms a strong UV resistant product when bonding.

How is the installed durability?

The rigid aluminum base spreads any applied load over a greater area of installation adhesive. Installation with a premium polyurethane adhesive/sealant is extremely durable, moisture resistant, and works very well on both smooth and textured surfaces.

How are the Ecoglo® photoluminescent strips installed?

Installation is simple: use adhesive (recommended for indoor use) or mechanical fasteners for extra durability outdoors or in high-traffic areas.

Are the Ecoglo® luminiscent strips slip-resistant?

Yes. Ecoglo® luminiscent strips feature high-traction ridges made of silicon carbide, bonded to an aluminum base for excellent slip resistance—even in wet or oily conditions.

What makes Ecoglo® a leader in photoluminescent safety technology?
